Methodology

A vessel is counted as being inside the Strait of Hormuz when its AIS position falls inside the bounding box defined by 26.10–26.95° N and 55.95–56.95° E and its speed is above 0.5 knots at the moment of entry. Direction is inferred from the side of the bounding box the vessel entered and exited. A crossing whose entry and exit sides are the same is classified as a U-turn or aborted transit.

Vessel positions are derived from public AIS (Automatic Identification System) data sources. AIS is crowdsourced and may be delayed, spoofed or incomplete — this dashboard is for educational and situational-awareness use only.
